Born Leader? Nope.
We’ve all heard it before: “Some people are just natural leaders.” It sounds flattering, but it’s one of the biggest myths that gets in the way of real growth. Leadership isn’t a personality trait you’re born with. It’s a set of skills you learn, practise and develop over time.
When people buy into the idea of the “born leader”, it puts pressure on new managers to live up to an impossible standard. If you’re not instantly confident, charismatic and decisive, it can feel like you’re failing. The truth is, most leaders are figuring it out as they go — and that’s completely normal.
Leadership is messy. One day you’re helping someone find their feet, the next you’re in a performance conversation you’d rather not have. The skill comes from showing up, reflecting on what worked (and what didn’t) and trying again.
That’s where coaching comes in. Coaching creates space to step back and actually think about how you want to lead. It helps you spot habits that hold you back and replace them with ones that support your growth. It’s not about turning you into someone else — it’s about sharpening your own approach, so you can lead in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.
So, if you’ve ever doubted whether you’re “cut out” for leadership, know this: no one is born with the skills. They’re built, one awkward conversation and one small step at a time.
