Experienced Leaders Don't Have All the Answers

Recently, I found myself feeling both imåpressed and slightly amused during a conversation with a senior leader. On paper, they were thriving. Strong results, a capable team, and years of experience behind them. Yet there they were, wrestling with a decision and wondering if they should have all the answers by now.

It made me smile because I hear this more often than people realise.

There seems to be a belief that once you've reached a certain level, you should be able to figure everything out on your own. As though experience somehow removes uncertainty. If only leadership came with a completed instruction manual.

The reality is that high performers often need a thinking partner more than anyone else.

When you're leading a team, making important decisions and carrying responsibility for others, it can be surprisingly difficult to find a space where you can think out loud without judgement. Friends have opinions. Colleagues have agendas. Teams need reassurance. Sometimes you just need someone who can help you untangle the knot in your head.

That is where coaching comes in.

Coaching is not about giving advice or pretending to have all the answers. It is about creating the space to slow down, challenge assumptions, explore options and think more clearly.

The leaders I work with are rarely lacking capability. More often, they are carrying too much information, too many perspectives and too many competing priorities. Coaching helps them sort through the noise and focus on what matters most.

One leader recently described coaching as "borrowing a spare brain for an hour". Whilst I cannot officially endorse that description, I understood exactly what they meant.

High performance does not eliminate the need for support. If anything, it makes it more important.

If you're carrying the weight of leadership and would value a dedicated space to think, reflect and gain clarity, I'd love to hear from you.
