Leading on Empty
Leaders are often expected to be “on” all the time. Available, decisive, resilient, supportive. But here’s the thing — no one can run flat out forever. Eventually, the tank empties. And when it does, performance, patience and perspective all take a hit.
The signs are subtle at first. Snapping at small things. Feeling constantly behind. Dreading the conversations that used to energise you. Leadership fatigue creeps in quietly but can quickly snowball into burnout if left unchecked.
This is where coaching provides a vital pause. It’s not another demand on your time — it’s a space away from the noise to reset and reflect. A place to notice what’s draining you and what could refill your energy. Sometimes it’s about boundaries. Sometimes it’s about perspective. Often, it’s simply about giving yourself permission to breathe.
When leaders take time to recharge, they don’t just feel better — their teams do too. A leader on empty can’t support others effectively. A leader who takes care of themselves creates stability, calm and clarity for everyone around them.
You don’t have to white-knuckle through exhaustion. With support, you can step back, refuel and lead in a way that’s sustainable.
