Leadership Would Be Easy... If It Weren't for All the Humans.
Nobody warns you about the emotional load.
They tell you about strategy, budgets and performance targets.
They don't tell you that you'll carry the weight of difficult conversations, worried team members, conflicting priorities and the occasional Friday afternoon crisis that arrives just as you're thinking about switching off.
Leadership isn't just mentally demanding.
It's emotionally demanding too.
Some leaders believe they're expected to leave their emotions at the door. Others feel they have to absorb everyone else's while pretending everything is absolutely fine.
Neither works for very long.
The strongest leaders aren't emotional sponges and they don't wear emotional armour either.
They recognise what's theirs to carry... and what's not.
Because if you spend every day taking on everyone else's worries, frustrations and pressures, you'll eventually run out of emotional fuel yourself.
Supporting people doesn't mean sacrificing yourself.
Sometimes the most effective thing a leader can do is create space, listen well and resist the urge to fix everything.
After all, you're leading a team... not auditioning for superhero status.
Leadership isn't about carrying everyone.
It's about helping people carry themselves.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
What's one habit that helps you manage the emotional load of leadership?
