The Part of Coaching No One Sees
When people hear “coaching”, they often picture an inspiring conversation, a few good questions, maybe even a lightbulb moment.
And yes, that’s part of it. But from where I sit, there’s so much more happening behind the scenes — and it’s deeply human.
Before the session
Every coaching session starts well before the first question is asked.
I spend time reflecting on what’s been shared so far — patterns, shifts in energy, unspoken tensions. I prepare frameworks, themes and sometimes tools that might help. But more than anything, I prepare myself — to listen fully, to stay curious and to hold space for whatever emerges.
It’s never just about “turning up and asking questions.” It’s about being ready to meet someone exactly where they are.
During the session
In the moment, coaching can look simple — a calm conversation, a few quiet pauses. But beneath that calm, there’s a lot happening.
I’m listening carefully to words, tone, emotion and energy. I’m noticing what’s said and what isn’t, paying attention to patterns and possibilities. I hold the tension between challenge and support, helping my clients find clarity without rushing them towards answers.
Growth often begins in silence, not solutions.
After the session
When a session ends, my work doesn’t.
I take time to reflect on what unfolded — what resonated, what shifted, and what might need attention next. I note insights, consider new approaches and sometimes explore frameworks or resources that could help unlock further progress.
I carry genuine care for each client — their goals, their challenges, their journey. Coaching is professional, yes, but it’s also deeply personal.
What coaching really is
Coaching isn’t a chat. It’s a structured, thoughtful process designed to help people think differently, see new options and make better choices.
It’s as much about creating space as it is about finding direction.
It’s about progress, not perfection.
And it’s always about the person in front of me.
If you’ve ever wondered what coaching could really do for you or your team, I’d love to show you what that looks like in practice — no buzzwords, just honest conversation
Full disclosure: my desk is never this messy. I’m firmly in the clear-desk camp — metaphorical chaos only!
