The Confidence Dip

New managers often expect confidence to grow steadily with experience. In reality, it’s more like a rollercoaster. One week you’re thinking “I’ve got this”, the next you’re wondering if you’re completely out of your depth.

This confidence dip is normal. Stepping into leadership brings new responsibilities and visibility. You’re making decisions that affect others and that weight can wobble even the most capable people. The danger is when that wobble turns into self-doubt that holds you back.

Coaching helps smooth the ride. It creates space to acknowledge the dip without judgement and build strategies to climb out of it. It might be about reframing mistakes as learning, or practising skills that make you feel more grounded. Sometimes it’s simply about realising you’re not the only one feeling this way.

The curve of confidence isn’t about eliminating dips — it’s about recovering from them quicker each time. With the right support, leaders move from questioning their abilities to trusting themselves more fully. And that’s when confidence stops being fragile and starts being steady.
